Diffusing Essential Oils

Aroma Globe Nebulizing Diffuser

Aroma Globe Nebulizing Diffuser

There are a ton of different types of diffusers available on the market today.  Some diffusers are electric, others involve candles, others nebulizing technology… It can get a little confusing and overwhelming.

Luckily I have gone through the lengthy and expensive process of trying most diffusers out there. First off I would like to discourage you from using any type of diffuser that involves heat whether this be by candle or steam.  Heat can modify the property of the oils and thus reduce it’s therapeutic effects.  And since you are using therapeutic grade oils might as well use a diffuser that actually doesn’t denature them right?

Nebulizing diffusers are definitely the way to go.  They  don’t use heat and if they are set up correctly will actually allow you to get the most efficient use out of your oils.  I would suggest getting the Aroma Globe diffuser.  This diffuser is to my knowledge, the most technologically advanced nebulizing system on the market today.

It is quiet and very simple to use, it is designed to maximize the biological effect while minimizing the consumption of essential oils. A built in timer turns it ON for 5 minutes and OFF for 25 minutes. It turns on 6 times in 3 hours, then shuts off automatically. Air flow adjustment knob lets you set the output you want.
It’s amazing that everything fits into such a small space just 4 Inches round by 5 1/2 inches tall.

It’s hard to see in the photo, but it also has merging RED, BLUE, GREEN and YELLOW lights that shine into the liquid. In the dark it looks AWESOME!  The large capacity globe will hold 15 milliliters of oil.

Coverage = 0 to 1200 square feet. Depending on the amount of air saturation you desire. You wont find a better integrated nebulizer than Aroma-Globe.  I know this sounds like a big sales pitch but believe me you won’t regret it, this is by far the best diffuser available.

Geranium Essential Oil

Young Living Essential Oils was mentioned in the December/January 2008 issue of Domino magazine, a style magazine centered on the home. In this current issue, Joshua Onysko, founder and alchemist of Pangea Organics body-care, mentions Young Living’s geranium essential oil as “one of the top eco-centric ways to look and feel fabulous in 2008.”

When used as a calming scrub, Onysko says, “The best essential oil by far is geranium. The scent, sweet and pungent, goes right to the frontal lobe, relieving tension and anxiety. The oil also helps speed up the reproduction of skin cells—a few drops mixed into a cup of sea salt and jojoba oil is a rejuvenating body polish.”

More about geranium:
Geranium has a penetrating sweet floral scent. It is restorative and relaxing with a strong strengthening effect while soothing to the mind and body. It has antiseptic properties and is widely used in skin care because of its ability to restore balance to oily or dry hair and skin. It is helpful for skin conditions and is gentle enough for sensitive skin.

Geranium can be used for inflammation with its mild, soothing effect. The action on the nervous system is pronounced, being a sedative with uplifting characteristics.

Nerve pain study
In a study published in The American Journal of Medicine, researchers divided 30 adults suffering Post Herpetic Neuralgia (the pain that lingers after a case of shingles) into four groups. One group received topical treatments of geranium oil, while two groups received a mix of geranium oil and mineral oil (at ratios of 1 to 1 and 1 to 10), and a fourth group received only mineral oil.

All of the subjects who received any amount of geranium oil reported pain reduction, and those who received treatments containing 100 percent geranium oil experienced the greatest pain relief. The placebo group reported little or no relief. Some subjects experienced a slight irritation from the geranium oil, but these irritations subsided within an hour or so.

Help for pets:
Effective as an insecticide due to its terpene content, Geranium is also used to repel ticks, fleas and mosquitoes from humans and animals alike. Many old herbalist books mention Geranium as being an excellent tick repellent. It can be used by putting the oil on the dog’s collar every week or added to the rinse when bathing. The most effective way to use it is in a spritzer bottle that you can spray on and rub in several times a week. Check with your vet before using essential oils on cats.

Essential oils & Alzheimer’s

Essential Oils and Aromatherapy for Alzheimer’s Patients

Flanagan, Nina. The Clinical Use of Aromatherapy in Alzheimer’s Patients. Alternative & Complementary Therapies. November/December 1995:377-380.
Megan Carnarius, R.N., is pioneering the use of aromatherapy, the therapeutic use of plant-derived essential oils, with Alzheimer’s patients. Known in Europe to be an effective mood enhancer and stress-relieving therapy, aromatherapy is becoming more well-known here in the United States, although its clinical use is limited. In Alzheimer’s patients, it can increase quality of life by reducing the anxiety that often accompanies the disease; its therapeutic use, however, is of special interest because of the connection between the evocative sense of smell and memory.

The aromatherapy program that Carnarius has developed for her patients in the Alzheimer’s unit at Manor Care in Boulder, CO, involves the use of diffusers, spritzers, facials, and massage with essential oils. Lemon oil, which helps patients wake up and focus their energies, is used in the morning in the diffusers and put on washcloths for facials; chamomile used to calm patients down in the afternoon or when they become agitated. The scents also work partly because they change the environment of the nursing home, breaking the stagnation and stimulating the patients to feel and remember.

Carnarius has developed an aromatherapy kit for use with Alzheimer’s patients which consists of five essential oils: geranium, lavender, marjoram, rosemary, and ylang ylang. She has trained Alzheimer’s unit staff at 13 centers, and there are over 450 patients using aromatherapy. Measuring results is difficult, but Carnarius says, “Since our programming is very structured, I know that with the oils, people stay in activities longer-they are stimulated more in general.”

About SAGE oil:

“11-03:  New research has proved that sage can improve memory, confirming centuries-old theories. British scientists have carried out the first clinical trials with healthy, young adults and found that those who had taken sage oil capsules performed significantly better in a word recall test.”

Essential Oils for a good nights sleep

If you know someone who needs to get some sleep, this message was created with them in mind. Please feel free to share this information with someone you know who might benefit by using an all-natural, more holistic approach to a better night’s sleep.

“A friend suggested that I try using the essential oil of valerian for sleep, so I decided to do a little research; the National Institutes of Health has a website devoted to Valerian for Insomnia and Sleep Disorders.: http://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/Valerian.asp. I was amazed how much clinical investigation there was on the properties of this oil. What I read about valerian was that it was very highly regarded as an all-natural sedative. What I learned about valerian from using it was that it is calming, relaxing, balancing, and a sleep aid. Just an aside, Valerian Root is generally regarded as safe (GRAS) for ingestion by the FDA. I would make sure the oil you use is therapeutic grade. ” John Rosenberger, Moses Lake , Washington

It is estimated that Americans spend $14 Billion dollars, every year, on our Sleep Disorders!

  • 58% of adults experience symptoms of insomnia a few nights or more per week
  • 35% of adults report at least one symptom of insomnia every night or almost every night
  • For those looking for a safe, effective, and cost-effective alternative, Young Living’s beautiful essential oils stand alone.
  • Try some oils tonight before you go to sleep. You may be pleasantly surprised!

“I use Essential Oil of Cedarwood on my feet before I go to bed and sleep like a baby! It stimulates the pineal gland which releases natural Melatonin. I feel this is also good for the brain since Cedarwood is high in sesquiterpenes [brain food]. I have also used Alkalime and Lavender for sleep….love it.” – Jackie K., Hemphill , Texas

“I put my daughter to sleep every night with a story and a kiss. Recently, I have added some reflexology techniques and the rubbing of Peace and Calming essential oils to the bottom of her feet, and some in her palms to smell deeply. The two of us become so relaxed and sleepy that we had to change our nightly ritual to stories first and oils last. She sleeps so soundly her blankets stay perfectly neat until she wakes up in the morning. Wonderful!” Stacy Allen

Suggested Oils for Sleep:

  • Valor
  • Lavender
  • Dream Catcher (For Nightmares)
  • Peace & Calming
  • Valerian (Strong)

Basil Essential Oil for ear infections

Here’s a recent study that indicates Basil essential oil can be helpful for ear infections. Of course we NEVER put oils directly into the ear!! but if you put a few drops on a cotton ball and rest the cotton ball on the ear, the aromatic vapors will gently work into the ear and do their wonderful healing. Grapefruit oil is also helpful for ear issues. Do the cotton ball thing, and also rub a drop of the oil on the mastoid process and around the outer ear. (Extra benefit: basil oil and the citrus oils also have relaxing qualities. So if you have a little one (or one who’s not so little!) who is uncomfortable and irritable from the ear infection, these oils can give a double whammy of benefit!

Essential oils may cure ear infections
Journal of Infectious Diseases, June 2005

Applying certain essential oils to the ear canal appears to be an effective treatment for ear infections.

If toxicity studies confirm the safety of (anti-bacterial) essential oil components for use in the ear, then a significant advance can be made in the treatment of ear infections. The vapours that are
released by essential oils, such as oil of basil, have been shown to have rapid bacteria-killing effects. Topical therapy for ear infections is usually not recommended because most drugs are in a
liquid form that cannot penetrate the eardrum to reach the infected middle ear. However, the vapours from essential oils may be able to diffuse through the eardrum and destroy the microbes present.

To investigate, researchers form the Landspitali University Hospital in Reykjavik , Iceland , tested oil of basil, various essential oil components, and inactive placebo on rats with experimental ear
infections. It was found that treatment with the oils cured up to 81 percent of the animals. With placebo, by contrast, cure rates did not exceed 6 percent.

The team noted that, based on their properties, essential oils may be able to destroy a variety of bacteria that can cause ear infections. They also point out that essential oils are generally
considered to be safe.

Cedarwood Essential Oil

CEDARWOOD (Cedrus Atlantica)

Inhaling the oils of cedarwood increases the ability to think clearly and enhances the awareness needed for effective prayer and meditation. This is because of all the essential oils of the world, Cedarwood contains the highest concentration of sesquiterpenes, which have the ability to pass through the blood-brain barrier and oxygenate the brain directly upon inhalation by way of the nasal passages and the olfactory nerves. It has been suggested that cedarwood oil might prevent senility and Alzheimer’s disease.

Perhaps this is why the palaces of King David and King Solomon were built of cedar. King Solomon contracted King Hiram to supply all the materials needed (The Cedars of Lebanon) in return for wheat and fine oils for every year as long as it took to complete the temple. Unfortunately, the cedars of Lebanon were nearly forested to extinction and today only small patches exist in the far regions.

Key Chemistry: Cedarwood contains 98% sesquiterpenes which deprogram misinformation written in the DNA due to trauma, abuse, loss and ancestral and limiting beliefs. Sesquiterpenes are considered the antidepressant in this valuable aspect. Cedarwood may also be useful as a general cerebral stimulant.
It may be diffused or applied topically as desired.

Fragrant Influence: Stimulates the limbic region of the brain (the center of emotions) and the pineal gland, which releases melatonin. Terry Friedmann, MD found in clinical tests that this oil was able to successfully treat ADD and ADHD (attention deficit disord ers) in children. It is recognized for its calming, purifying properties.

Medical Properties: Combats hair loss (alopecia areata), antibacterial, lymphatic stimulant.

USES: Hair loss, arteriosclerosis, ADHD, skin problems (acne, eczema)

Application: (1) Apply on location, (2) massage on feet, (3) directly inhale, (4) diffuse

Two great testimonials for Cedarwood:

CEDARWOOD FOR COLD/SORE THROAT
….And speaking of Cedarwood. I have a nasty cold and sore throat. A couple Sundays ago I woke up with a hacking cough and my wife told me to put Cedarwood on my throat & chest. I did, and it helped immensely.

CEDARWOOD FOR SLEEP
At night I place a drop or two of Cedarwood on my forehead and temples then dab the rest under my nose or perhaps on the outer rims of my ears. I fall asleep much more easily, perhaps because Cedarwood is known to stimulate melatonin, the “sleep hormone.”

* Use only the BEST therapeutic grade essential oils. EO’s from bath shops and natural foods stores are often perfume grade and thus may not yield therapeutic results. Perfume grade oils have been rendered toxic by the distillation method, fillers, chemical extractants, etc. and may cause adverse reactions.
